Masters in Political Communication- Speeches by Candidates, An Analysis
SPEAKER: Narendra Modi
SPEECH: BJP Dogma with an Eye on 2014 Elections
AUDIENCE: People of Sehdol, M.P.
OCCASION: BJP Rally in Madhya Pradesh
EFFECTS: A Very Good Impact on both BJP and Non BJP Voters.
Narendra Modi presently holds the PM candidature from BJP in India. He is a master of words which speak volumes about his confidence and authority in all the speeches. Born an orator, he displays a strong deportment which reflects his dominant persona and traits of a leader.
In his speech at Sehdol, he made a clever attempt to woo the voters. His campaign was a clear intention of grabbing power in the state which was evident from the way he started his speech saying that- “These days it’s so difficult to find venues for BJP rallies; No ground is big enough as we have so many fan followers.” With such a self-centered beginning, he was all set to entice the audience.
His words focused more on the ‘Shivraj government’ this time as he was to deliver a speech in Madhya Pradesh. He said the following things:
“MP Govt under Shivraj ji has done a lot to protect forests and for the upliftment of tribals and women. Child mortality rate has come down massively in MP under Shivraj Singh Chouhan.”
He used the tactics of ‘Agitation’ to get hold of the listeners by mentioning what BJP can do and Congress cannot. He quoted that “For 50 years did Congress remember to work for the welfare of women & children? Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first to induct leaders for tribal communities. Tribals have been there for a long time, but it was Atalji who created a separate department for their welfare. He created a separate ministry & budget for Adivasis.”
Modi’s style-campaign seemed to be low on content regarding BJP’s policies and focused more on verbally attacking the opposition. He tends to show a bias for a class of people and culture in his words which certainly affects the country as a whole.
He kept saying that people are angry and want to punish Congress. He also tried to be a one-man show by reflecting his own ego when he said that “our aim and motto is the development of all. We believe in the development of all sections of the society and sectors.”
Another method which he used to entertain the listeners was the use of humor. He addressed Rahul Gandhi as ‘Shehzada’ and made fun of him by saying “Shehzada says the poor wants to sit in a plane. If you had made schools, poor would be flying jets today.”
He kept criticizing Congress in each of his sentences by hitting the economic downfall of the country and mentioning that Congress has failed miserably to curb inflation in 100 days.
He agitated the masses to get rid of Congress by breaking all relations with a party that breaks promises- “Agar Congress ne wada toda to hume nata todna chahiye ke nahi. Can you trust Congress promises or the words of their leaders? They are those people who mislead you, so never trust them.”
Modi is a master of political communication who succeeds in making people believe the fake figures of development. With his storytelling skills and humorous approach, he has become a supremo of a broadcast world by attracting TRPs for so many media organizations. He is all set to be crowned as the PM of the country and dictate people from his hot seat.
SPEAKER: Rahul Gandhi
SPEECH: Congress Propaganda with an Eye on 2014 Elections
AUDIENCE: Residents of a Village in Rajasthan
OCCASION: 2014 Elections
EFFECTS: Lack of Persuasion, Audience Still Unsure About Whom to Cast Their Votes
Rahul Gandhi as a public speaker still holds a schoolboy image among the audience. His entire craze exists not because he is the vice president of Congress but only due to his young political looks that attract the youngsters of our nation. In terms of communication skills, his presentation is very poor. The way he pronounces phrases lacks modulation and goes into the state of monotony that disappoints the listeners. He speaks too gently which in a way shows that he is making an effort to be friendly with the audience but at the same instance tells us about his lack of confidence.
He often overdoes the gesture which certainly distracts the audience. He lacks the expertise to understand the importance of context and situational awareness as he is just a beginner. As a public speaker, Rahul mostly tries to use the ‘Description’ tactic by making his speech go personal. He is inclined towards the ‘pathos’ element which is very much reflected in his words specially when he mentioned the murder stories of his grandmother and father and displayed a sense of intimidation that similar thing could happen with him any sooner. He also projected the fact that even today he is a ‘Mumma’s Boy’ and follows what Sonia Gandhi says. By doing so, he was aiming to connect better with the young listeners and the women. Unfortunately, this funda has not helped him in any sense. In a way, he has failed to deliver the Congress propaganda to the masses which ultimately might affect the votes in 2014 elections.
He still needs to read his audience’s mind and do the homework for all his speeches.
SPEAKER: Shivraj Singh Chauhan
SPEECH: BJP Dogma with an Eye on 2014 Elections
AUDIENCE: People from various parts of Madhya Pradesh
OCCASION: Karyakarta Mahakumbh Rally at Bhopal
EFFECTS: A Very Good Impact on Both BJP And Non BJP Voters.
Shivraj Singh Chauhan is a very skillful public speaker who has an ability to persuade the masses. He is truly a ‘Desi Neta’ in his speeches. He justified the ‘B for Bhartiya’ in BJP by addressing his audience using the phrase ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’ He also welcomed Narendra Modi on stage by quoting him as ‘An Idol of Governance and Development- Our PM candidate for 2014 elections.’
He made the masses clap and shout so loudly that their voices shall reach Delhi and shake up the entire territory of Congress. He used lots of ‘Sanskrit Shlokas and Hindi Proverbs’ to make the audience feel that he too is the man of soil just like every other Indian. As a speaker, he is well aware of the factors like Age, Gender and Culture which make his speech sound so well crafted. He did not bring in the Hindu-Muslim agenda just like other BJP members normally do which gave his speech an edge over the others. He possesses auditory skills that help him change his tone depending on the content. This was evident from his level of confidence when he stated that ‘BJP will make a Hatrick in M.P.’
As a narrator, he does it really well. In the rally, he mentioned the story of a small boy who kept running after Shivraj’s ‘Rath’; with both his hands engaged; holding his loosened trousers with one, wiping his nose with the other and still managing to shout at the peak of his voice- Aandhi hai toofaan hai, M.P. me Shivraj Singh Chauhan hai. And then, Chauhan thanked his followers for all their love and support and later he stated that ‘I will never let Congress destroy the future of such young kids.’ With his brainpower, experience, and intellect, he makes sense of the messages he tries to deliver.
He made all efforts to attack the opposition and expose their negativities. He also used ‘Visualization’ technique to read the mind of people and then influence them to vote for BJP. His understanding for the context and situation is amazing. He kept making fun of Congress because his sole aim was to build voters for BJP and in a way he seems to have succeeded. He is very good at story-telling and uses sarcasm as a tool to defeat the opposition.
He recited an incident about his visit to an area affected with flood and saw that all the insects, animals and other creatures who would normally keep killing each other were united, and stayed silently on the trees to save their lives due to fear of flood. And then he described that same is the situation with Congress. Despite so many clashes inside the party, leaders have suddenly come together on the basis of the election because they fear that BJP will pour water on all their aspirations of winning.
He questioned that on what basis Congress is trying to suppress BJP under the corruption charges and then he mastered his speech by reading out the list of scams by Congress in alphabetical order. He concluded with a remark that Congress is involved in all scams from A to Z and have not left even a single letter; BJP will surely burn the corruption and Congress will be defeated soon.
In his later speech, he focused on the ‘Propaganda’ method by not only mentioning the programs launched by BJP but also comparing each of them with Congress. He used a dialogue- ‘I am showing you my report card and you all shall decide who has performed better BJP or Congress.’
The new themes in his speech were relief funds, irrigation, electricity and setting up of small scale industries in the state itself. He commented that Congress men talk about economy and people say M.P. does not have industries; the irony is that not just M.P. but whole India celebrates festivals like Rakshabandhan and Diwali but sadly Rakhi and Crackers come from China!
Chauhan included the ‘Inspiration’ component in his speech by saying that we will make all small and big things in our own state. He mentioned few programs that will help youngsters take loan from bank to start up an industry and added the ‘pathos’ element in his speech by saying that their ‘Mama’ (Shivraj himself) will give guarantee to banks. Shivraj also stated that Congress has destroyed education in the country by giving poor incomes to the teachers. He made a joke out of this to entertain the audience which was-
“Shivraj asked a central school kid - Ganga kahan se nikalti hai beta?
Kid- Vindhyachal se.
Shivraj to Teacher- aap ye kya padha rahe hain bacchon ko?
Teacher- 500 Rs. ki salary me main Ganga Himalaya se nahi nikal sakti. Utne me to Vindhyachal se hi nikal paegi. ”
And then he ended his speech by requesting everyone that if they want change, they all must devote entire two months to BJP to let the ‘lotus’ blossom (their party symbol). He made everyone pledge for a ‘Congress Mukt Bharat’ and said thanks with full confidence on his power of persuasion.
SPEAKER: Jyotiraditya Scindia
SPEECH: Congress Propaganda for state elections
AUDIENCE: People of Vidisha, M.P.
OCCASION: Congress Rally in Madhya Pradesh
EFFECTS: A Very Good Impact on first-time voters and a lesson to learn for BJP leaders
Jyotiraditya Scindia has the ‘Jan Sevak’ attitude in his genes which he seems to have derived from his grandmother and father. In his rally at Vidisha, he started his speech differently by saying that though he is now a politician but his interest is not politics; it still is social service. To him this district is not a political ground to play on, but a family who has always supported his entire family. With relaxation and elements of satire in his tone, he then quoted- “I am not Shivraj.” He then commented on BJP by bringing in the Ayodhya Mandir factor on an ironical note here saying that ‘Vo kehte hain Ayodhya me hum Mandir banwaenge par kabhi tareek nahi batate.’
Talking about skills of a speaker, Scindia has got each of it. He did an amazing preparation for framing his speech which he clearly evident from the contents he talks about. He is the master of all elements- Invention, Arrangement, Style, Memory, and Delivery!
He has got a remarkable sense of understanding the demographics of an area where he conveys a speech. He did a very good survey of Vidisha district and mentioned each of the promises which are still not fulfilled by the opposition may it be good roads or security for youngsters, women, government officials and shockingly even the police officers themselves. He also addressed the issues of agriculture where BJP has presented false figures just to gain votes. He mentions that in a state like M.P. where BJP thinks to have helped farmers, then why is it that in five years of their tenet, 11,000 farmers have committed suicide. He said that where BJP talks about ‘Ladli Lakshmi Yojana’ everywhere then why is it that in M.P. 40% female feticide has taken place in just five years. He went even serious when he spoke of BJP’s ‘Employment Program’ and questioned that why a majority of youngsters in the state are still unemployed.
Scindia’s context in terms of situation and environment is outstanding. He has portrayed himself as a man of ‘Perception’ and ‘Perfection’. He sounds very interesting, relaxed and comfortable with his audience which makes his speech a perfect one. His personality reveals his values and morals which make him an idol especially among the youngsters. He truly is a man of ‘Discipline’ in his language.
His also dealt with corruption issues in the state by giving remarks that despite giving Ten years to a government, till date M.P. lacks good industries and business projects. His speech took a humorous turn when he tagged BJP as the ‘SS’ government. He then gave a chance for the listeners to decide what actually is ‘SS’ and comically where few answered it as ‘Shivraj Singh’, many others shouted in high pitches ‘Sharma & Suryavanshi.’
Scindia then described that how BJP has destroyed the entire state by their dirty politics. He was shaken by the fact that how can just two men have all the contracts of the state and indirectly highlighted that this is a part of corruption. He stated that corruption is not just in industrial projects but even in small things like ration card and surprisingly, BJP has got into religious corruption too- ‘Inhone to Bhagwan ko bhi nahi choda.’ He addressed issues like relief funds where BJP shows off by saying they have given financial support to farmers, women, youngsters but what difference will it make with a cheque of just “Rs. 10.” He laughs over the fact that BJP has just one motto- ‘Dikhado Sapna aur Sabka Maal Apna.’
He switched over to policies of Congress where he stated that BJP has fooled you with roads and electricity issues. All the National Highways and Electricity developments are in fact a part of Central government project funds issued by Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi. Scindia mentioned that BJP had earlier promised that they will turn Vidisha into Paris and asked his audience if it really has. Hearing a ‘No’ from all directions, he said that he is proud to announce that as the Power Minister of India, he is getting funds of Rs. 80 Crores for electricity in Vidisha district so that each and every village can see the ‘Lattu’ (Bulbs).
Scindia’s speech has got the element of ‘Inspiration’ where he made an effort of speaking not to woo the voters but to serve the masses. He suggested the audience that such a fake government shall be thrown out of the political grounds as all they can do is land its people in trouble.
He is blessed with ‘Anticipation’ skills as well which leave his listeners with a surprise wanting them to hear more from a speaker like him. This was very much noticeable when he suddenly started talking about a movie and a song in his speech. He said that BJP often reminds him of a 1980 film; Hum kisi se kam nahi and its popular song…. He took a pause and then began to sing-‘Kya hua tera waada, vo kasam vo iraada.’
He turned both his mics toward the crowd and signaled them to continue singing the same song and eventually walked out of the stage express amusement.
It’s not hard to say how beautifully he crafted his entire speech which left the audience instigated and gave BJP a reality check of its own fake policies. As a speaker, he is a master at encoding his content and presenting it efficiently.
